The Importance of Ergonomics in Interior Design

When decorating a new home, in addition to space planning, interior design style and color matching, did you know that interior design ergonomics are also important?

The so-called ergonomic size means that designers will take the height, body shape, and habitual movements of family members into consideration when planning each space to ensure that it is consistent with home safety and convenience.

In this article, Chengge Designer will share how to do ergonomic planning in interior design for the five major places of entrance, living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom from past service cases. Let’s take a look!

Interior design ergonomics: entryway

The entrance is the first home space that you will come into contact with when you enter the home. It is not only the first impression of the home for family members, but also for guests. The entrance is not just a place for entering and exiting the home. In fact, it contains many ergonomic planning ideas:

  1. Height of the door: Usually the height of the door is more than 200 centimeters, and the minimum is not less than 180 centimeters. It is less likely to hit the head when entering and exiting the door.
  2. Height of shoe cabinet: The main function of the entrance is to put on and take off shoes. At this time, it is necessary to consider whether it is convenient to take and place shoes. Usually the height of shoe cabinet will be between 90-120 centimeters.
  3. Storage space: In addition to putting on and taking off shoes, sometimes the entrance hall is also used to store coats, umbrellas or keys. If there is extra space, storage cabinets can also be considered.
  4. Lighting equipment: Even in the entrance hall, it is important to have sufficient lighting equipment. It not only makes it easier for people to put on and take off shoes and find shoes and items, but also allows people to feel the warmth brought by the light when they return home and open the door.

Interior Design Ergonomics: Living Room

The living room is the most commonly used public space in the home. It can provide a comfortable rest and entertainment environment, and is also a place for family members to talk. Therefore, when it comes to interior design and ergonomics, it is not just a matter of buying furniture casually:

  1. TV size: Although the larger the TV screen, the more visually stunning it will be, but you still have to consider the distance from the TV to the sofa. Generally speaking, the best distance between the TV and the sofa is 3-5 times the diagonal length. In other words, a 55-inch TV should be at least 320 centimeters away from the sofa. In addition, the viewing angle height of the TV is also very important. We recommend The TV must be at least 55-60 cm above the ground.
  2. Sofa selection skills: The most important furniture in the living room, the sofa, also has selection skills. It is recommended that the width of the sofa for 2-3 people should be at least 140-200 cm, the depth is 60-80 cm, and the height is 45-50 cm. When sitting up It will be relatively comfortable. .
  3. The distance between the coffee table and the sofa: The selection and distance of the coffee table depends on the sofa. Generally speaking, the height of the coffee table is between 40-45 centimeters, and the distance between the coffee table and the sofa should be 30-40 centimeters.
  4. Passage design: Since almost everyone will pass by the living room when they return home, please ensure that the passage to the living room is spacious enough, preferably at least 90-120 cm.
  5. Lighting and daylighting: Please ensure that the lighting and light in the living room are sufficient, because this is the place where everyone spends most time besides the bedroom. If there are lighting restrictions, be sure to add lighting equipment.

Interior Design Ergonomics: Kitchens and Dining Rooms

The kitchen and dining room are places where ergonomic dimensions need to be highly considered. The main reason is that the kitchen is mostly used by specific members, so the user’s body shape can be taken into consideration when planning the kitchen.

  1. Height of countertops and cabinets: If the kitchen user’s body shape conforms to the average height, then the height will be between 85-95 cm and the depth will be around 60-70 cm.
  2. Socket and switch locations: There are many appliances in the kitchen that require electricity, including refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, etc. Designers usually arrange the placement of each appliance first, and then proceed with power distribution.
  3. Tips for choosing a dining table: Generally speaking, the height of the dining table is about 75-80 cm, and the height of the dining chairs is 45-48 cm. As for the shape of the dining table and the comfort of the dining chairs, it depends on the individual and the space configuration. Every homeowner’s needs may be different.
  4. Passage design: The passage in the kitchen and dining room only needs to be able to accommodate one person to pass through, so it is recommended to leave more than 90 centimeters.

Interior Design Ergonomics: Bedroom

The bedroom is the most private space for each family member, and it is also the place where ergonomic dimensions need to be considered most, because each family member has different body shapes and needs:

  1. Bed size: As the most important furniture in the bedroom, in addition to considering the needs of single and double beds, you can also pay attention to the bed height, which is usually between 50-60 cm, making it easier for people to get in and out of bed.
  2. Wardrobe: The wardrobe part is also a major focus. Usually the height of the wardrobe is between 180-220 cm and the depth is 60-80 cm. However, if you are designing a children’s room or a room for the elderly, you can consider a cabinet with a lower height to make it easier for them to access clothes.
  3. Lighting equipment: Since bedrooms are mostly used for resting and sleeping, the lighting must be mainly gentle and comfortable; if the bedroom and study are in the same space, then the lighting switching method can be used.

Interior Design Ergonomics: Bathroom

The bathroom is a space that every family member will use. The biggest focus is convenience and safety:

  1. Height of the sink: When designing the sink, you must consider whether the human body will need to bend down when standing. The recommended height is about 85-95 cm.
  2. Shower cubicle size: Considering that people have enough space to bend down and move around in the shower, the length and width of the shower cubicle should be at least 80 centimeters.
  3. Anti-slip design: It is generally recommended to separate wet and dry areas in the shower to avoid slipping in and out. But if the bathroom space is limited, you should at least use anti-slip floor materials to ensure safety.
  4. Ventilation design: Bathrooms need to have good ventilation design to ensure air circulation and reduce mold growth.
